Preface
Language teachers and language learners are often frustrated by the disconnect between knowing the rules of grammar and meaning of abundant words and being able to apply those rules automatically in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. This disconnect reflects a separation between declarative knowledge and procedural knowledge.
A century of research shows that traditional grammar and vocabulary lessons—those hours spent diagramming sentences and memorizing parts of speech and memorizing of words galore—don’t help and may even hinder students’ efforts to become better reader.
These students are victims of the mistaken belief that grammar lessons and knowing vocabulary must come before reading, rather than grammar and vocabulary can be learned better through reading.
Happily, there are solutions. Just as we teach children how to ride bikes by letting them to see our riding and then putting them on a bicycle, we need to teach students how to use correct grammar and words in their writing and speaking by letting them to read them in a text before. Once students get ideas how these grammar and vocabulary helped writers transfer their meaning thoroughly, they are ready for instruction—including grammar instruction—that will help communicate their ideas.
This book aim at learning grammar and vocabulary through reading to let student see grammar and vocabulary they are going to be taught in the context and even practice it before they are taught directly.
